Energy retrofitting of existing buildings is key to successfully transitioning to sustainable cities. Nexity is committed to this project and has signed a “green deal” with the Plan Bâtiment durable (a voluntary commitment entered into with the French Government). Another approach is reversible design for existing properties, which helps minimise environmental impacts by transforming obsolete buildings rather than demolishing them, so as to meet needs other than those originally expected.
Respecting both history and nature: a former merchant navy school on the doorstep of Le Havre is being turned into an “inhabited park”, open to all and 100% pedestrianised. Priority is given to protecting land, with only 21% of the total area being used for buildings. Particular attention will be paid to restoring the natural water cycle, selecting plants suited to the local environmental and climate conditions and developing biodiversity-friendly features.
